Mini Twist On Child

I decided to put my daughters hair into small twist. I first washed her hair with Aussie Moist, then i used Hello Hydration Conditioner. She has very thick hair. The mini twist took 2-3 hours. Hopefully these last for a week.

Thanks for reading! Have any questions, please let me know. =)

Shea Moisture Curl Kit

Today's hair is with using the Shea Moisture Curl Kit. I first used these products in my first month of my big chop and loved it. Haven't tried it again until today and im still i fan of it but it gives my hair a lot of shrinkage, more using this than with other products. My hair is very moisturized and looks like it also. In the pictures my hair is mostly dry. Gives my hair nice tight curls.

The Shea Moisture gives very good shine that last all day.

Very moisturized and gives shine and bouncy curls.

Tips to Prevent Hair Breakage

Tip #1- Use a moisturizing shampoo and don't shampoo too frequently, which can increase dryness.

Tip #2- Condition after every shampoo. For weak hair, use a strengthening conditioner and follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. Use a deep conditioner at least once a month. Also consider moisturizing instant and leave-in conditioners, but avoid 2-in1 shampoos & conditioners.

Tip #3- Be gentle. Don't brush hair when it's wet, instead apply conditioner to wet hair and gently comb through any tangles that might exist.

Tip #4- Use styling products that moisturize and add emollients.

How i Coiled My Hair

Today i decided i wanted to try to do coils. Of course i went to YouTube and looked at videos. I wanted to try the easy way and use a soft brush. I did it like the following video but i didn't like how mine were turning out. It made my hair really frizzy.

So i decided to just do mine individually using my fingers and twirling them. I had  co-washed my hair last night then sprayed my hair with water and oils and did the (Baggy Method), then this morning i sprayed my hair with just water and added leave in conditioner and some Eco Styler Gel with Olive Oil. This process only took me 30-45 mins, not too long and loved the way my hair turned out, im gonna see if i can make these last about 5 days. Ill post pics for each day to see how it turns out!

My Hair Growth!

Just wanted to share a pic of my hair tonight after cowashing...its 3 months and 3 weeks since my BC!So excited of my growth. Any questions please leave a comment. Thanks for following my blog =)

Baggie Method on Natural Hair

Many of you probably haven't heard of the baggie method. I love using the baggie method to help lock in moisture.
I posted this video from YouTube since i don't have a video of my own on how to do this method. My steps how to use this method is the same as the lady in the video. I like to use it over night. First i spray my hair using my water bottle. In my bottle i have water, peppermint oil, grape seed oil and olive oil, then i use my leave in conditioner(Knot Today), then i place the baggie over my hair. I leave it on overnight. I also put my satin cap over the baggie so that it doesn't come off while sleeping. The next morning i take the baggie off and my hair is very moist and last me a few days. This is the method i am going to use this winter, since this will be my first year with my natural hair. I'm hoping this will help with moisture during the winter months. I hope this helps you all that are having issues with locking in moisture!

Leaving in conditioner is generally a good practice, but watch out for these 3 things!!

Should you really leave conditioner in your hair?
This is a question that I have been asked several times. I must clarify first and say that when you wash your hair, you should rinse out all the conditioner thoroughly (for reasons known as potential itchiness, personal experience here, some science to follow). The question posed here is whether you can then use a little bit of conditioner afterwards as a moisturiser or on a daily basis. The answer to this question is yes you can use conditioner as a moisturiser but with caution.
So there are two main types of conditioner
1. Rinse out conditioners (heavier type that is used after shampooing to add softness – typical ingredients include fatty acids, surfactants and oils)
2. Leave in conditioners (much thinner and lighter, typically contain humectants such as glycerine to help moisturise hair )
Now, leave in conditioners are a no brainer, they are designed to be left in. The heavier rinse out conditioners are a little more tricky. They can be used but be aware

1. Using a silicone heavy conditioner (silicone in one of the first 5 ingredients) is not ideal unless you shampoo your hair, because the silicone creates moisture proof buildup on your strands. Co-washing your hair will simply not do.
2. Conditioners which contain protein (hydrolysed protein or amino acids) have been shown to cause irritation and itchiness in some people (contact urticaria is the medical term). (Allergy. 53(11):1078-1082, 1998).
3. Hair conditioner can contribute to build up. This was explained in a very intricate study (Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, pg 205-214,1989). The science behind this is that the hair conditioner has positive charges and the shampoo has negative charges. Depending on the amount and type of shampoo, the hair conditioner can either be removed or the shampoo can simply attach to the hair conditioner and cause build up. Naturally if you have been applying hair conditioner to your hair on a daily basis, then you will have much more of the positive charge.
So what precautions can you take if you want to use heavier conditioner as a daily moisturiser?
1. Don’t put the conditioner on your scalp, try as much as possible to target the ends of your hair (leave the scalp and the first 1-2 inches alone).
2. Read the ingredient list and if you are a no shampoo person, avoid silicones in the top 5 list of your conditioner. If you shampoo, then no worries here.
3. Pick a conditioner without proteins.
4. Rinse your hair thoroughly on your wash day.
5. Use a conditioning shampoo on your wash day if you are not anti-poo.

Are You Drinking Water At The Right Time?

I found this chart when i first started my hair journey and i follow this and it has helped me along the way. Healthy hair = healthy way of drinking water and its great for your body. =)

Mae's Top 10 for Healthy Natural Hair Care

1. Don’t be afraid to experiment with products and styles. You’ll learn so much about your hair!

2. Get involved with the rapidly growing online natural hair community (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, Fotki, etc.).

3. Protect your hair at night by sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase, and/or wearing a satin or silk bonnet/scarf.

4. Look for products that have a water base to moisturize your hair & remember to drink water!

5. To help with detangling, use a wide tooth comb on hair that is wet and saturated with conditioner.

6. Sample products. Try to buy sample sizes that you can test first and visit swap” parties to exchange products with friends.

7. Do Natural YOUR Way. No two heads of hair are alike, so stick with what works for you.

8. Take pictures! Documenting with photos can help you keep track of your hair journey and will remind of you of what worked and what didn’t.

9. Moderate your use of heat as excessive heat use can lead to heat damage over time, which can loosen and permanently damage your natural curl pattern.

10. Minimize breakage by ensuring that your hair is free of split ends. This can be treated with trims as needed.

Some Products I Have Tried and Currently Using.

I like to use Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave in conditioner. I have also tried the Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I liked it in my hair but its kind of expensive.

I really like the Naturally You,Motions Brand. I use the Hydrate My Hair Pudding and Define My Curls Creme. Some people don't like the ingredients but it gives my hair great curls.

I also like the Eco Styler Gel with Olive Oil. It doesn't make my hair hard or flake in my hair and i also get the same curls with the gel and water as Kinky Curly products or The Motions Naturally You line.

If anyone has any questions about these products please let me know, i will answer them as best as i can, Thanks! =)

All About Me and My Fro Journey!

Hey everyone!! Just a little about me and my hair journey. Im 26 years old and thought it was time for me to try something new. A couple of years ago i started to get sew-ins every 2-3 months and during this process i decided that i wanted to go natural. November of 2011 was my last relaxer. I continued to get sew-ins until March 2012 and then wore my hair(transitioned). May 24,2012, i decided to do the Big Chop(BC). Ever since this day i have loved me hair so much! Its crazy how fast its growing and its a healthy fro. This month will be my Th month of being natural. Through this journey i have learned many, many things about natural hair and i continue to learn more. Its a new hobby that i love. I will soon start some YouTube videos, i didn't think i would ever make videos but everyone's hair is different. Products that have worked for me, have not worked for others. I will be posting my reviews on some products that i have tried and what i like to use. Stay tuned for more to come!
